Home / Create a image or back-up
Note: The steps described below are a follow up of Getting started.
When you open up the "Create image" module of Cyric for the first time, you will be presented with a screen as shown on the picture below.
Cyric Client UI - Create image (version 4.1.6)
Here you can set the name of the image and select which device you would like to use to create a image from.
Keep in mind that some devices are not shown in this list, these include:
Cards in a SD-slot.
DVD's in a DVD-drive.
Any USB connected device.
We currently do not support imaging these devices.
NOTE: If you do not specify a name for the image, a Universally Unique Identifer (UUID) will be used. This name is not permanent and can always be changed afterwards from within the Melissan web portal.
By pressing the button Create image of this disk, Cyric will initiate the image creation process. Depending on the type of the storage (HDD, SSD, nVME) and the size of the disk the total duration can vary between 10 - 60 minutes.

Important: On a Windows device it is possible that the image creation will fail. One of the most common reasons is because Cyric doesn't know how to handle Windows devices that aren't fully shutdown. If this happens to you, make sure you completely shut down Windows and try again.
Head over to the FAQs to read all tips and tricks related to image creation.
You successfully created a image! From here on out, we can choose different paths depending on what you'd like to do with the image:
Keep the image private for the selected device only.
At times a device needs to be backed-up which contains personal- and sensitive data. In this case, we choose to keep it private so other devices are not allowed to use this image as a restore image. This is Cyric's behaviour by default for each image created.
Restore the image on a different device (which is the same model) available locally at your store.
If the image does not contain any personal data. You are allowed to assign a model group to the image. This can be achieved through the Melissan Admin Client. By doing so, each device with the same SKU is allowed to use this image as a restore image.
Distribute the image to the mesh
Distributing a image to the mesh means that we will set this image publically available to all other Cyric servers connected to the mesh. Only certified stores are able to publish images to the mesh.
Using the checkbox at the bottom left you can immediately shut down the device after successful completion. This saves energy and you can immediately see what has already been completed and what is still in progress.

The results will be added to the asset's timeline in the Melissan web portal. If you'd like to see this, then follow these steps after successfully creating a image:
Search the device asset by entering the device's serial number in the Quick Search bar at the upper right corner.
Select the matching device.
The page that is currently visible shows you the timeline of all Cyric events.
Here you will see the name of the image that was created of the device.
