Home / Store your files securely
NOTE: The steps described below are a follow up of Getting started.
Cyric's default behaviour is to create a data vault on the server in case it doesn't yet exists.
However, Cyric allows you to create two different types of data vaults; either one that lives on the server or one that resides on your personal external hard drive. Here we will show you how you can create both types and the benefit of having one or another.
Data vault on the server (default)
To create a data vault on the server, all you need to do is click the data vault module on the Dashboard.
Cyric will now create a personal data vault which is only accessable by this device.

Data vault on a external hard drive
To create a data vault on a external hard drive you need to have a external hard drive.
From the Cyric dashboard, click on the "Data Vault" module.
Press "Other data vault"
Select "Create a new data vault on an external drive"
Press Continue.
Your drive will be prepared...

Warning: When using a external hard drive, keep in mind that this drive will be formatted! All your data on this drive will be lost!
The benefits of storing vaults on the server are:
Pros:
Ability to store multiple vaults on the server for all devices.
Transfer speed can reach a maximum of 10 Gbit/s (depending on your Cyric setup).
Cons
Server storage capacity is managed by Service Planet in case you want to expand.
The benefits of storing vaults on a external drive are:
Pros
Portability
Manage your own storage capacity
In case the server gets breached (which is very unlikely), the vault is safe on your external storage.
Cons
Possible to lose track of the storage device.
Cyric provides you a GUI where you can drag and drop files and directories.
The left side view is the host (your computer).
The right side view is the vault (server).
To start backing up your files, you can simply start dragging any file or directory from the left side view and drop them in the right side view. It is also possible to use the CTRL and SHIFT modifier keys to specifically select certain files and/or folders.
Cyric will show the progression, speed and estimated time of completion (ETA) until the transfer is complete.
IMPORTANT
If you are unable to expand your hard drive, please verify if the drive is not encrypted.
When the device has the Windows OS installed and you are not able to drag-and-drop (transfer) your files locally to the server it might be possible that Windows was not fully shutdown. Read the FAQs for instructions.

Tip: If you only need to create a back-up of the user's home directory it is located at: C:\Users\<username>. If you are dealing with a Advanced user, they sometimes move their home directory to a different drive. Make sure to check those also!
Retrieving files is actually quite similar as storing files in the vault. All we have to do is reverse the process;
Select the files and/or directories that you would like to retrieve.
Drag them to a specific location on your computer.
Again, a modal will be displayed that shows you the progress, speed and estimated time of completion (ETA) until the transfer is complete.
Some results are not stored on the Melissan web portal. This includes events from the Data Vault. However it is possible to manage the data vault through the web portal and allow access from other devices for example. As a matter of privacy and security, the device that created the data vault is the only device that has access to the data vault by default.
